Service Opportunity Supporting Medical Mission Work

Phi Iota Chapter will be collecting toothbrushes and toothpaste in support of our Vice President, Cindy Weston as she embarks on a mission trip to Turkey. Please drop off your donations to the reception desk in the College of Nursing at Texas A&M Health Science Center by July 10th.

I will be in Turkey July 15-25 at a Yazidi Refugee Camp in Diyarbakir. The majority of the Yazidis lived in northern Iraq and fled the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) when they took control in 2014. There are approximately 200K (seems unimaginable) living in plantation style tents with some taking residence in municipal buildings.   We have been told the people witnessed atrocities before escaping including personal attacks and abductions and mass shootings of children. Several months ago the Turkish authorities asked a small Christian community to help the refugees with the greatest need of medical and dental care.  There are established health clinics within the camp but apparently the need is tremendous- I am also told MDR TB has become an issue.  I have partnered with this team from FBC Montgomery, AL in the past and they reached out to me to join them. They are requesting we bring toothbrushes & toothpaste for the families.  Thank you for considering toothbrush donation as a community service from STTI.
